At Gospel Oak Primary and Nursery School, we are proud to be a Rights Respecting School. In March 2025, we officially achieved the UNICEF UK Bronze: Rights Committed award. This recognises our commitment to putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of our school’s planning, policies, and practice.
Our journey is driven by our children. The Junior Leadership Council (JLC) plays a pivotal role in embedding rights across the school. Recently, our JLC members have been:
Peer Mentoring: Planning and leading specialised RRS assemblies for our younger children to help them understand their rights in an age-appropriate way.
Community Ambassadors: In February 2026, members of our JLC represented Gospel Oak at the first-ever Camden primary school-wide RRS event. They collaborated with pupils from across the borough to share ideas on how to make Camden a more rights-respecting place for all children.
We believe that learning about rights is just as important as learning through them.
PSHE: RRS is now fully embedded in our PSHE curriculum, helping children connect their rights to their personal safety, wellbeing, and relationships.
RE: We are currently moving our focus into the RE curriculum, exploring how different faiths and worldviews align with the universal rights of the child.
We ensure that RRS language is part of the "fabric" of our school day through:
Weekly RRS Assemblies: Each week, the whole school gathers to focus on a specific article from the UNCRC, discussing what it means for us and children globally.
Right of the Month: To deepen our understanding, we focus on one specific "Right of the Month," allowing classes to explore a theme in detail.
The Friday Reset: Every Friday, staff and pupils engage in a "Reset" focus. This uses RRS language to reflect on the week and set positive intentions for the week ahead.
Working with Parents and Carers
Rights do not stop at the school gate. We are committed to ensuring our families are partners in this journey:
RRS Parent Workshop:We hosted a dedicated workshop to introduce parents and carers to the UNCRC. We explored how we use rights in school and how the language of rights can be used at home.
Home-School Links: Every week, we share our RRS Reset Focus with families. We encourage you to use this shared language at home, helping our children understand that they are rights-holders in every part of their lives.
